Although the basis of a pool is painted white, how is that water is still blue?
My brother does …. We painted it white and it definitely looks blue.
A popular response in the past has been a phenomenon known as light scattering. You have to figure the sky is blue, and coloring Water is a reflection of the water. That is only part of the answer, however, because we have to remember that many times the rivers are green or gray, blue oceans and sometimes even black!
So much of the color change comes from the depth of water and also its angle of vision. White sunlight contains all the colors. Water absorbs some of those colors more than others.
It takes a large amount of water, however, for this affect, so if your cup of water in your hand is clear, a large body of water molecules quickly absorb red light, but do not absorb blue light, so in this case the blue light is transmitted through water. This is also why the sky is blue!
